Zlatni Cekin
"ZLATNI CEKIN" (GOLDEN COIN) CENTER FOR THE REHABILITATION AND EDUCATION OF HANDICAPPED CHILDREN
"Zlatni cekin" was founded in 1993 with donations from Franciscans of Bologna (OFM) and The Children's Festival "Zecchino d'oro" (Golden Coin). Which name was given to this Center. The Franciscan province of Sarajevo takes responsibility for the building and organization of the work, but the Franciscan monastery of Slavonski Brod (Croatia) is the official representative for this program.
DEFINITION OF THE PROBLEM
Children with physical and mental handicaps, risk group children and the children injured in the war need intensive treatment that cannot be received in the family environment. This treatment can be received at the "Zlatni cekin" Center. The early therapy and constant expert work can help handicapped children be prepared for life. In this wide area, there are no institutions the deal with these problems nor with the preschool education of handicapped children. This center has all the conditions for the optimal preparation of handicapped children for independent life. Kindergarten "CEKIN" with Montessori program includes healthy children with handicapped children with the intention of better preparation for life. Together with the kindergarten program, they use necessary daily therapy in the clinics of this center.
THE SCOPE AND POSSIBILITIES OF "ZLATNI CEKIN"
In "Zlatni cekin" there is a functioning clinic with two teams: physiatrist and pediatric who offer outpatient care for children with physical and mental handicaps. Therapy is done on an individual basis. The facilities and personnel availability offers the possibility of good work. A special contract allows us the hospitalization of about 20 children from distant areas. There exists also the possibility for the accommodation for mothers of infants. While the children are in therapy, the mothers educate themselves so that they will be able to work alone at home with their children. The children do not stay in the center on weekends. Multidiscipline work is a big advantage for this center. Along with the health related work of the clinic, the educational work of the kindergarten is very important because it is directed toward the socializetion of handicapped children. The work of the clinic and kindergarten here are compatible and inseparable. The rehabilitation procedures used by the special teacher for the children with mental retardation, speech therapist, psychologist, music therapist, physical therapist, occupational therapist and kindergarten teachers are under the control of a team of experts from the center. Under the expertise and supervision of members from this center and the good cooperation with parents, we have succeeded in helping many children with different handicaps. The efforts and contributions by the good people are now like a big blessing from God for the handicapped children and their parents.

Zlatni cekin have a new instrument (ultrasound!) for head and hip of small children
Dear friends!
Even though it is very difficult nowadays to raise money in order to finance and maintain the work of one institution, we have managed to celebrate the 15th anniversary of our Centre with the acquisition a new instrument (ultrasound) for head and hip of small children. With this instrument is very much enriched our work a great deal: early diagnostics, early rehabilitation and early integration of children. We are doing the best to prepare the children for school and later on for life.
A few friends were of great help in acquiring the ultrasound instrument. Their contribution was primarily for the purpose of buying this machine and that's why their names are listed on our web site. For years we've had help from numerous friends who have been following our progress from the very beginning and we owe them a great deal of appreciation too, especially now during the economic crisis. Without their help it would have been impossible to help so many children.
With the help from God and kind people we have managed to accomplish a lot of things in the last fifteen years. Everyone sees and acknowledges that. 'Zlatni cekin' is the only institution in a wider area where handicapped children can get polyvalent professional help. We have to thank God for the fact that we in our work don’t have debts at the moment but we constantly worry about how to pay for current expenses, or cover the cost of equipment, staff education, etc. It is hard to move forward without new investments and I have to emphasize that the parents of these children don't have to pay to get the help needed.

In occasion of 15 years opening of Zlatni cekin (Golden coin) along with the word of thanks to all who helped in our works. I would you, dear Friends, like to accompany some information on our works. Very big numbers of handicap children are asking help in Zlatni cekin and we get them health care, education and other kind of assistance. After opening of Zlatni cekin in Slavonski Brod, a lot of parents of children with special needs are lucky because now they can find right help for their children. The concept of our work is: early diagnosis, early rehabilitation and early socialization of the disable children Our Staff is still bigger than 45 people. There are: 2 teams: pediatrician and physiatrisan, 3 special educator (teachers for mental retardation), 1 speech therapist, 1 physiologist, 8 nurses, 6 physiotherapists, 11 nannies and administration. Professional staff and good equipments give good result. Our center is visited by 200 children daily. The number of chil¬dren seeking our help is still increasing. We often treat children from Bosnia and Hercegovina as well. Last year the number of children who have come for help is bigger 600. We have also kindergarten with Montessori program. Children with special needs are together in group with healthy children. There are almost 90 children in kindergarten and over 30 % of them are disabled.

Thanks to God, in spite crosses and hardship we are going through, Zlatni cekin is doing quite well, thanks to good work and good results and to our ability to adapt to new conditions. Although we are not in¬debted, but we are still worried all the time: how to find the money we need to continue working, for diagno¬stic equipment, for continue education of the staff and things like that. It is hard to move forward without new investments. Having trust in God and good people, we have been doing our best for the past 15 years. Every¬one sees and acknowledges that we have done a lot. Zlatni cekin has become an institution for the grea¬ter area where disable children can find professional help. The parents of such children get all the help for free.
Beside rehabilitation and education work, last years during the summer period in Zlatni cekin we have put in order the court-yard and we have very well roofed one place outside that makes possible for the children to stay outside when it is bad weather. Having money which we needed for our works and bills is hard to reach, but in this Jubilee year we have a little bit establish ourselves. Some friends from outside have helped us with the money for building and some organization here around helped us with the manpower and materials. In this occasion I would like to thank them and all other donors which have joined and support us in our works. We have written their names in our benefactor’s list. Thanks very much to all!
